The L Mark
The L Mark of Laser Product
Safety LLC (LPS) is recognized globally as one of laser, LED, UV and/or IR
radiation safety. LPS clients display the L Mark
with great pride to indicate they have taken the initiative to have their
product tested and certified by LPS. If the product evaluation is successful
manufacturers submit a sample once a year to LPS for re-testing to determine the
manufacturer's continued compliance with global laser, LED, UV and/or IR
radiation safety requirements. The L Mark on a product means that LPS has tested
and evaluated representative samples of that product and determined that they
meet the applicable radiation safety requirements. The product is re-tested once
annually by LPS to ensure they continue to meet global radiation safety
requirements. The L Mark may be only used on or in connection with products
certified by LPS and under the terms of written agreement with LPS.
A product certification from LPS
is a valuable marketing tool. It means your product has successfully met
stringent standards for radiation safety compliance. It will greatly assist you
in promoting your product to the global marketplace. LPS does not “approve”
products. Rather it evaluates laser, LED, UV and/or IR products, components, and
systems for compliance to specific radiation requirements, and permits
acceptable products to carry the L Mark, as long as they remain compliant with
the standards. A manufacturer of a LPS-certified product must demonstrate
compliance with the appropriate safety requirements. LPS conducts an annual
re-test of the product to check ongoing compliance. If a product design is
modified, a representative sample may need to be retested before the L mark can
be attached to the new product.
LPS certification does not
guarantee the product will perform correctly or that it is safe under all
conditions (such as product misuse). The L Mark does not carry any legal weight
beyond that of any other company’s trademark. The L Mark is different from the
CE Marking or the FCC Part 15 requirements, which are required by law. However,
it may be difficult to sell laser, LED, UV and/or IR products without the L
Mark. Distributors may be unwilling to carry a product without the L Mark
certification, and the use of noncertified products may void insurance coverage.
Local jurisdictional authorities, such as building, electrical and fire
inspectors, may be unwilling to allow a product for installation unless it
displays a third-party compliance mark such as the L Mark.
If you have questions regarding
the L Mark or submitting a laser, LED, UV and/or IR product to LPS for
evaluation and eligibility to bear the L Mark, please contact any LPS office or
visit the LPS website.
